Pokemon GO Guide: How to Get Sun Stone

Pokemon GO fans that are jumping back into the game after the introduction of over 80 second generation Pokemon may be surprised to see that Niantic has added some other bells and whistles to the experience as well. There are some Pokemon that can no longer be evolved with just candy as it was in the original version of the game, but rather require the use of special evolution stones as well.

Pokemon GO adds evolution stones like the Sun Stone to the experience, which is used to evolve the grass-type Pokemon Sunkern into Sunflora and Gloom into Bellossom. For those looking to add these rare Pokemon to their collection, here is where to find the Sun Stone and what else players need to do to evolve their Pokemon with it.

To find a Sun Stone, players need to visit PokeStops and keep their fingers crossed that one will be bestowed upon them. Unfortunately, there is no fool-proof method of guaranteeing a Sun Stone from a PokeStop at this time. Basically, the only thing players can do is spam PokeStop wheels until they end up with a Sun Stone.

As is the case whenever players are trying to collect an evolution stone, or any special item from a PokeStop for that matter, the best bet is to visit an area with a lot of PokeStops. This way players can hit a number of PokeStops in quick succession, which should help them build their supply of Pokeballs and potions for healing after gym battles in the process.

Who Can Evolve with the Sun Stone

Pokemon Go: How to Get the Sun Stone - Gloom

As stated previously, there are two Pokemon that can evolve with the Sun Stone in Pokemon GO, Sunkern and Gloom. The easiest Pokemon to evolve with the Sun Stone is Sunkern, as it only requires 50 candies along with the Sun Stone to evolve it into Sunflora, so players may want to focus on obtaining that particular Pokemon first.

Gloom is a bit more difficult to evolve into Bellossom for a couple of reasons. For one, the Bellossom evolution demands players collect 100 Oddish candies in addition to the Sun Stone. Secondly, players that are trying to collect all the Pokemon will also need to take into account that it costs 100 Oddish candies to evolve Gloom into its other evolved form, Vileplume, so they will need to decide which Pokemon they will want to obtain first, as both require a serious grind for candy.

The best way to obtain Oddish and Sunkern candy is to use the traditional methods. Players can hatch them from eggs, catch them in the wild, transfer duplicates to the professor, and assign them to be their buddy Pokemon to obtain candy as fast as possible. It will still take a while for players to earn enough candy to obtain both Bellossom and Vileplume, but the effort should be well worth it for those trying to catch ’em all.

It may take some time to collect enough Sun Stones and candy, but dedicated trainers shouldn’t have too much difficulty adding Sunflora and Bellossom to their collection of Pokemon. After they do manage to catch Sunflora and Bellossom in addition to the other Pokemon that require evolution stones, players will have obtained some of the most elusive Pokemon added in the game’s Johto update.

Pokemon GO is available now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
