Ubisoft Announces Tie-In Ghost Recon: Wildlands Documentary

Ubisoft announces a feature-length live action documentary called Wildlands that ties in with its upcoming Bolivia-based shooter, Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

Gamers eager to jump into the fray with Ghost Recon: Wildlands have had ample opportunity to sign up for the upcoming closed beta, which is now available for users to preload. With the release of Ghost Recon: Wildlands just about a month away, Ubisoft is ramping up its marketing efforts to build up anticipation for the title. Today, the publisher announced a tie-in documentary for the game called Wildlands.

While Ubisoft didn’t give any estimate on where or when the documentary would be released, it did release a short trailer for the upcoming live action film. The documentary will follow several real-life stories of people affected by the drug trade in Bolivia, where Ghost Recon: Wildlands will take place.

This isn’t a low effort tie-in. Ubisoft has confirmed that the Wildlands documentary will be a feature length film, and will feature interviews with both criminals and government officials. Both sides are no strangers to violent confrontations, with a person in the video above stating that over 300 people have been killed because of conflicts related to Bolivia’s cocaine trade.

Ubisoft is concurrently working on a separate, entirely different live action film called War Within The Cartel that will be centered around the Santa Blanca drug cartel, a faction that players will have to deal with within Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The 30 minute live action movie is scheduled to be streamed on the official Ubisoft Twitch channel starting on February 16, 2017, so gamers interested in discovering more about the Wildlands lore can mark that date on their calendar.

Live-action aside, Ubisoft has shown plenty of straight gameplay trailers for the game as well, giving a relatively thorough look at what gamers can expect ahead of the beta. Most recently, a 20 minute long gameplay video made its way online through official channels. The video provided an in-depth look at game’s single player capabilities,  and provides a nice juxtaposition to the publisher’s strong focus on multiplayer missions.

Since the scope of the documentary’s release is still unknown, gamers could be in for a very limited theatrical release, though the title could make like some other video game-related movies and find its way to Netflix. In any event, Ubisoft certainly has all pistons firing in regards to the marketing for Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and is evidently hoping that the exciting co-op potential of the title will reel players in en masse.
